According to AgriNews the FDA has just released their new dietary guidelines, and recommends that Americans double their intake of seafood. Low in fat and cholesterol and high in protein, the new report highlights the benefits of eating more fish and shellfish.
"We are excited by the release of the new USDA HHS Dietary Guidelines," said Bridget Own, the executive director of Soy Aquaculture Alliance. "It highlights the importance of lean proteins, including seafood. Fish and shellfish are delicious and healthy options to add to a family's weekly meals."
However, the government's new dietary guidelines hasn't been met with approval all around. According to Sci-Tech Today, the scientific integrity of the drafting process of the new guidelines is being called into question, mainly with how the document suggests to all but eliminate any form of cholesterol.
Cardiologist Steven Nissen doesn't think this is the answer, and questions the scientific study behind the new document.
"Properly performed studies may demonstrate that saturated fat and cholesterol are indeed nutrients of concern, but the opposite conclusion is also possible," writes Nissen in The Annals of Internal Medicine. "It is time to transition from the current evidence-free zone to an era where dietary recommendations are based on the same quality evidence that we demand in other fields of medicine."
