New York governor Andrew Cuomo demands an end to conversion therapy, the harmful practice of trying to turn gays and lesbians straight

Society has invested heavily in gay conversion therapy up until recently. The National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR) reports that it was only in 2000 that the American Psychiatric Association published their reports finding the process ineffective and harmful.

And while the process to outlaw conversion therapy has been long and arduous, states are finally making progress in this endeavor.

According to, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced Saturday that he was behind the movement to ban conversion therapy in the United States, pledging to do all he could for the state of New York. The current practice of conversion therapy, also known as reparative therapy, aims to change sexual orientation of individuals from homosexual to heterosexual using methods such as hypnosis, psychotropic medication, behavior therapy, and others.

Cuomo's decision comes shortly after gay right's advocates had campaigned across the country to ban the outdated and dangerous practice.

"Conversion therapy is a hateful and fundamentally flawed practice, [punishing people] for simply being who they are," stated Cuomo.

While numbers for conversion therapy are unavailable, the tactics used can often cause shame and depression for those who are pressured to undergo the process. Minors are the most vulnerable.

"No young person should be coerced or subjected to this dangerous so-called therapy," said Chad Griffin, the current president of the Human Right's Campaign.

Currently conversion therapy is banned in four states: California, Oregon, Illinois, and New Jersey. Washington D.C. and Cincinnati also have bans on the practice.
