United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon is calling for meaningful action to combat violence against women.

"I call on governments to show their commitment by dramatically increasing national spending in all relevant areas, including in support of women's movements and civil society organizations, " said Ban.

According to Secretary General Ban, the violence that the world perpetrates against women is more than simply a human rights violation. It is also getting in the way of sustainable growth in developing nations. Ban says there must be a forceful and message sending statement from world leaders to prevent further violence against women in the future and to punish perpetrators of such violence in the past. According to Ban, lack of funding is a sizable impediment to growing anti-violence sentiments in developing countries, but these countries cannot afford to ignore the issue.

"Violence against women and girls imposes large-scale costs on families, communities and economies," said Secretary General Ban said during a speech delivered onthe International Dayfor the Elimination of Violence against Women."The world cannot afford to pay this price. Women and girls cannot afford it and should not have to, yet such violence persists every day, around the world."

Secretary General Ban asserted that violence against women can take women away from being able to work, which affects the economies as women will not be able to earn income. Women being out of work also leads to less production in businesses and also taxesthe social services coffers of developing nations.
