Microsoft will no longer help or participate in technical support forums for Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows 8.1 RT, beginning next month. There are numerous other products getting the axe as well, as they are focusing their efforts on more recent products.

With regards to software, Microsoft will no longer provide assistance or support for Microsoft Security Essentials, Internet Explorer 10, Office 2010, and Office 2013, as of July as well. Some hardware is also affected, including Surface Pro, Surface Pro 2, Surface RT, Surface 2, Microsoft Band, and Zune. Not only is Microsoft dropping support, but it is also locking some forums so that other users will no longer be able to help or participate, although many will remain active.

It has not been reported as to when exactly in July this will take effect, but some have speculated it will begin on the first of the month. Although some forums will be locked, most will remain active, just without the participation of Microsoft itself.

Some forums that are being locked include Microsoft Band and Zune. Microsoft is encouraging its customers to instead look to Microsoft Band 2 forums. Microsoft has said that it will continue to monitor existing forums to make sure that it remains “safe and positive”.
